5c Documentary Inland Exchange revenue stamp single on marriage certificate

George Washington, American, 1732 - 1799

Effective October 1, 1862, the U.S. Congress initiated a tax program that used revenue stamp taxes on almost all transactions, including personal, official, and business transactions and documents. The Documentary Inland Exchange revenue stamp on this 1871 marriage certificate indicates that taxes were paid on the document.
