Eulogium Sacred to the Memory of the Illustrious George Washington...

Black and white engraving served as a commemorative tribute to George Washington as well as an advertisement for teaching rhetoric and calligraphic penmanship by schoolmaster and printer Benjamin Owen Tyler. The work is comprised of numerous calligraphy samples of verse from Washington’s eulogy, masonic symbols, a sun, cherubs and highly stylized eagles surrounding a bust portrait of George Washington on a pedestal. This was Tyler's first printmaking effort, so he partnered with engraver Peter Maverick, and publicized the work to appeal to the market for patriotic materials following the War of 1812.
