Downloading Public-Domain Images from the Rijksmuseum

The Rijksmuseum is famous among reuse-minded people for the sheer resolution of its downloads — many public-domain works are available at tens of megapixels, high enough to print large or crop tightly and still keep detail.

The Rijksstudio route

The most flexible path is a free Rijksstudio account:

  • Find a public-domain work in the collection.
  • Save it to a set, or use the download control on the object page.
  • Choose the highest resolution offered and save the file.

Rijksstudio is explicitly built to encourage reuse — the museum wants people making things from the collection, from phone cases to fine-art prints.

Check the rights first

Not every image is downloadable at full size; some newer works or loans remain restricted. Look for the public-domain / downloadable indication before you plan a project around a specific piece. How to Tell If an Artwork Is in the Public Domain covers the general test.

Through Musist

In Musist, open any Rijksmuseum object and you'll see its rights status and, when the work is public domain, a direct Download image link to the source file — plus IIIF deep-zoom to inspect it first. Start from the Rijksmuseum-filtered feed or let Wander surface pieces you wouldn't have searched for.
