About Musist

Musist is a place for artists to ground themselves in the work of the artists who came before — the actual record, drawn live from major museum collections. Every image here was made by human hands, most of them centuries before software existed.

There is no AI anywhere in this product. Nothing is generated, synthesized, or "enhanced." When you find a thread worth pulling, you are looking at a real object with a real maker, a real date, and a museum you could walk into.

Every work carries threads — a medium, a technique, a culture, an era, a subject. Gather lets you pull a thread from one work, see the real works that share it, and keep connecting threads from work to work until a set ties together into something you want to make. It is idea gathering, not idea generation: the combinations are yours, the sources are the record.

Pin works and save gathered idea sets to your Sketchbook. It lives entirely in your browser's local storage — no account, no sync, nothing sent to a server. Private by construction.

The feed federates 3 sources: The Met, Rijksmuseum, and Smithsonian. Each source is queried independently — if one is slow or unavailable, the others still load, so the page degrades gracefully rather than breaking.

Wanderis grounding, one hop at a time: from any object it drifts to related works — often across institutions — keeping a breadcrumb of where you've been. Use it when you don't yet know what you're looking for. Surprise me(in the menu) skips straight to a single random object's detail page.

Where a museum exposes a IIIF image, you can pinch and scroll to deep-zoom into the artwork at full resolution — close enough to study brushwork and tool marks. Public-domain works are badged as such and can be downloaded directly for use in your own studies and pieces; everything else links back to its source institution.
